Job Title: Special Education Assistant
Reports to: Principal and teacher(s) assigned

Primary Purpose:
Help special education teacher provide for physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities in special education setting. Assist in implementation of classroom programs, including self-help, behavior management, and instruction programs. Work under general supervision of principal and immediate direction of certified teacher.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
High school diploma or GED
Valid Texas educational aide certificate
Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Ability to work with children with disabilities
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
Ability to communicate effectively
Knowledge of general office equipment
Experience:
Prior experience working with children preferred
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
1. Assist the teacher in preparing instructional materials, classroom displays, and instructional activities.
2. Work with individual students or small groups to conduct instructional activities/exercises as assigned by the teacher.
3. Assist in the implementation of each student’s Individual Education Program as directed by the teacher.
4. Assist with the administration and scoring of student assignments and tests.
5. Assist in monitoring and supervising students throughout the school day, both inside and outside the classroom, including cafeteria, bus, or playground duty, as assigned.
6. Assist in maintaining a neat and orderly classroom.
7. Assist in inventory, care, and maintenance of supplies and materials.
8. Assist the teacher in keeping records and preparing required reports.
9. Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events, as appropriate.
10. Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
11. Assist the teacher in the use of instructional technology for students.
12. Keep the teacher informed of any special needs or problems of students.
13. Maintain strict confidentiality.
14. Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations, board policy, and federal and state laws, rules, and regulations.
15. Perform all other duties as assigned.

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals; standard instructional
equipment.

Environment: Biological exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases.
Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress.
