Primary Purpose:
An instructional assistant (float) is responsible for providing instruction, managing the classroom environment, and promoting student learning in the absence of a regular classroom teacher. Daily assignments will be determined by campus administrator-based campus needs.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
High school diploma or hold a General Educational Development (GED) certificate
Valid Texas educational aide certificate
Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics
Ability to work well with children
Ability to communicate effectively
Experience:
Some experience working with children
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional Support
1. Provide instruction to students under the direction of assigned teacher or assigned program; work with individual students or small groups.
2. Help maintain a neat and orderly instructional environment.
3. Help with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
4. Help teachers keep administrative records and prepare required reports.
5. Help manage behavior of students. This includes intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous students as needed.
Student Management
6. Help supervise students throughout school day, inside and outside classroom or designated areas. This includes the lunchroom, bus, and any other duty.
7. Keep campus leadership staff aware of special needs or problems of individual students.
Clerical Support
8. Compile, maintain, and file reports, requisitions, records and other documents according to standard procedures.
Other
9. Participate in staff development training programs to improve job performance.
10. Participate in faculty meeting and special events as assigned.
11. Uphold and enforce state and local policies of the school.
12. Maintain confidentiality.
13. Other duties as assigned.

Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals.

Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may lift and move books and classroom equipment
Assistants covering absences of Special Education teachers: Occasional heavy lifting (45 lbs. or over) and positioning of students with physical disabilities, controlling behavior through physical restraint, assisting non-ambulatory students, and lifting and moving adaptive and other classroom equipment.
Environment:
Work inside and outside; exposure to noise
Mental Demands:
Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
